last breakfast
I didn’t hear a peep from you guys yesterday. I did however, get a text from Auntie Georgia around 8 this morning. George and Lila, you were both puking and missing your mommy. Oh dear. I decided to come back home even though we hadn’t planned on leaving the hotel until noon. I left daddy there to relax and enjoy the quiet and I went home to make sure everything was ok. It’s hard to be sick and away from your mommy. Nobody else knows exactly what you like when you’re not feeling well like your mommy does.
I got auntie Georgia to find some chicken bones in the freezer and get some chicken soup started. I like to call it Magic Soup because it seems to heal your tummies. I put fennel and ginger, onions, carrots and celery in with the bones to flavor the broth. After it’s simmered for a couple hours, I remove everything from the broth and then add back the meat, fresh carrots and celery, and noodles of some sort.
Katie, I woke you up right before I left. I tapped your shoulder, and you rolled over and sleepily said, “Mommy…you’re home!” It was so sweet. You called me mommy. I’m going to replay that moment over and over again in my mommy brain any time I need to go to a happy place.
I’m so darn grateful to Auntie Georgia for giving me peace of mind while we were gone. There’s no way I could have relaxed the way I was able to if she hadn’t been there with you.
I stayed until 10:45, drove Jane to work and headed back to the hotel. Daddy and I had one more snuggle in our robes before packing up and going out for one last breakfast. I wasn’t super hungry, so I just picked off daddy’s plate. He had a crab and shrimp omelette. So delicious.
George, we walked back in the door and you jumped up off the couch, said, “hi mom!” then promptly puked all over the carpet. What a welcome home. I was almost tempted to throw it into reverse, back out the door and go back to the hotel. But I didn’t. I went to the kitchen to get something to clean the puke, and daddy went to get a bucket to wash the carpet. We hadn’t even taken off our shoes or coats yet.
George, you and I had a nap in the afternoon. You were adamant that you didn’t need one, but you fell asleep pretty darn fast.
Daddy ran some last minute errands before our trip tomorrow, and got the van prepared for the journey to Kelowna tomorrow. Katie, you and I stayed home and got the presents organized and packed. It was quite a job even though I’ve been prepared for a while now.
Jane, you were at Donald’s family’s Christmas dinner. You got all dressed up and had a gift for Donny and his family. Very cute. I’m glad you’re interested and capable of joining other families for special occasions. Not every kid can do that with so much confidence. You said the dinner was delicious and you came home with a little box full of small gifts from his family.
George and Lila, by the time you went to bed you were both feeling better. I’m so glad because I was worried we’d have to postpone our trip to Kelowna.
